British comic artist and publisher Garry Leach died on March 26, 2022. He was 67 years old.
The penciller, inker, colorist, editor, and publisher was born on September 19, 1954, and attended Central St. Martin’s College. Leach began his career in 1978 at 2000 AD, working on Dan Dare and the superspy series M.A.C.H. 1. Then, he provided art on Judge Dredd stories like “The Day the Law Died,” “Night of the Bloodbeast,” “Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman,” “Ten Years On,” and “Oz.”
In ’81 he joined Quality Communications as art director and became the first artist on Alan Moore’s Marvelman in Warrior. Once he stopped being the primary artist, Leach stayed on as inker for Alan Davis. Leach and Moore would work together to create Warpsmith for Warrior, who would be a supporting character in Marvelman, then appeared in his own strip.
He and Dave Elliott set up Atomeka Press in ’88, starting with the anthology A1. In the ‘90s, Leach worked in advertising, then jumped back to comics as John McCrea’s inker on Hitman. For Warren Ellis’ Global Frequency, he designed several of the characters and drew the first issue.
Leach also provided art on Magic: The Gathering cards and produced covers for Titan Publishing’s Judge Anderson collections. In the mid-2000s, he restarted Atomeka Press with Elliott, publishing new and old A1 stories.
