The Society of Illustrators is running an exhibit on the art of Angelo Torres from May 11 to September 3, 2022.
Torres spent four decades with MAD magazine illustrating some of their funniest art of movie and TV parodies. He worked on EC Comics, working with the likes of Al Williamson, Frank Frazetta, and Roy Krenkel. After leaving EC, he moved over to Atlas Comics, drawing short stories for mystery titles like Uncanny Tales, Astonishing, and Marvel Tales. He also worked at Warren Publishing on Blazing Combat, Creepy, and Eerie.
Torres’ art from EC, Warren, MAD, and more will be exhibited for the first time at Society of Illustrators. There will also be a sampling of original art by Al Williamson, Frank Frazetta, Gray Morrow, Wallace Wood, Jack Davis, Reed Crandall, Will Elder, and others. A preview of new art by Torres and Stefan Koidl for The Unwanted, the upcoming Fantagraphics Otto Binder graphic novel, will also be displayed. Exhibits will also feature commentary that provides context for the work.
The exhibit is curated by Robert L. Reiner with special thanks to Clint Morgan. There will be an opening reception on Friday, June 17, 2022, at 6 PM.
The Society of Illustrators is located at 128 East 63rd Street, New York, NY 10065.
