Well known collector, author, and historian Roger Hill died on December 6, 2023. He was 75 years old.

Hill was a passionate EC comics and original art collector, who also collected monster magazines, science fiction toys, movie posters, and horror, sci-fi, and fantasy pulps. Additionally, he collected sheet music, gum cards, reference books, and even more material related to horror and science fiction.

Hill used his love of collecting to promote the hobby through organizing fan events, creating fanzines, and sharing his expertise with fellow collectors.

Born on October 14, 1948, in Wichita, Kansas, Hill spent four years serving in the Navy. He was an instrumental figure in organizing and running early comic cons in Wichita and supported conventions throughout Oklahoma, Texas, and into the Midwest. He supplied advertising art and window display art to local comic shops and was a member of the Oklahoma Alliance of Fans.

Hill and fellow collector Jerry Weist published Squa Tront, the first comic fanzine in Wichita, which celebrated EC stories and art. He was affiliated with the fanzine for over 40 years as both a contributing writer and artist.

In the early 1990s, he was a comic art advisor for Sotheby’s in New York City. Hill edited and published the EC Fan-Addict Fanzine in 2003, and his first book, Wally Wood: Galaxy Art and Beyond, was published in 2016.

He is survived by his wife, Terry Hill, sons Kevin Hill and Joseph Rudnicki, and stepchildren Nicole Lindeman and Bryce McClintock.

“Roger Hill was a champion of EC fandom and a giant among comic book historians, original art collectors and those who appreciate the contributions made by fantasy and comic book creators,” author Robert Reiner said. “He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and diligent scholarship, as well as his shared friendship with countless fans and admirers.”

In 2002, Hill spoke with Scoop about meeting Forrest J. Ackerman and how it influenced his journey as a collector.
