Disney’s Tron: Ares has added a skeptic to their ranks. Gillian Anderson has joined the third movie in the sci-fi/fantasy franchise, which is directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) and stars Jared Leto.

Her casting comes as the movie resumes filming. It had been shut down due to the SAG-AFTRA strike and picked up filming after the holidays. Disney is staying tightlipped about the movie’s plot, although they have stated that Leto will play Ares, a fictional character who will travel from the virtual game landscape to the real world.

Anderson became a popular sci-fi heroine by playing FBI Agent Dana Scully on The X-Files in the 1990s and the revival that ran from 2015 to 2018. Recently, she played British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Crown and played therapist Jean Milburn in Sex Education. Her character in Tron: Ares has not been announced.

The Tron film series began in 1982 when Jeff Bridges played the virtual world’s creator, Kevin Flynn. The long-awaited sequel, Tron: Legacy, came out in 2010, starring Garrett Hedlund as Kevin’s son, Sam Flynn.

Tron creator Steven Lisberger has been involved in the new project, which was written by Jesse Wigutow (It Runs in the Family) and Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes). It also stars Greta Lee, Even Peters, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins, and Jodie Turner-Smith. Tron: Ares is executive produced by Russell Allen, with Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer, and Leto producing.
