Comics writer and artist Paul Neary passed away on February 10, 2024, after a long illness. He was 74 years old.

Born on December 18, 1949, in Bournemouth, England, Neary spent over 50 years in comics, as a writer, artist, letterer, and editor.

On a trip to New York in the early 1970s, Neary visited Jim Warren’s office and got his first job in comics on the Hunter stories in Eerie magazine. He also worked on Creepy and Vampirella while at Warren Publishing.

Back in the UK, he worked on comic adaptations of Hammer horror films, the Doctor Who magazine, and was a ghost artist on the Lance McLane newspaper strip. Neary joined Marvel UK as an artist/editor, and eventually worked his way up to being the editor in chief. He worked on Hulk Weekly, reinvented Captain Britain, and drew comic strips featuring Hulk and Nick Fury.

Neary moved to the US and continued to work at Marvel. He had a three-year run penciling Captain America, and co-created characters like Sin (Red Skull’s daughter), Flag-Smasher, Diamondback, and the Scourge. While at Marvel, he worked on Ka-Zar, a Nick Fury miniseries, he inked Uncanny X-Men, and he created Madman, Tales from the Rim, and Wildweed.

At DC, he inked Batman and the Outsiders, Detective Comics, and Excalibur. Then he moved back to Marvel UK as the art director, handling titles like Dark Angel, Motor Mouth, Dark Guard, Knights of Pendragon, and more. He also inked and did finishes on titles like Authority, Ultimates, and JLA at this time. More recently, he inked an Authority story for The Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special.
