Cover artist Jeffrey Veregge, who was known for his work across multiple publishers, died on April 12, 2024. In 2021, Veregge announced that he had a severe form of lupus. His wife, Christina, stated that he died unexpectedly after a heart attack. Veregge was 50 years old.
He was member of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe and grew up on the reservation in Kingston, Washington. Veregge was known for using his Native American background in his “Salish Geek” style. He crafted memorable covers for publishers like Marvel, Valiant, BOOM! Studios, Valiant, IDW, and Dark Horse.
Veregge was the cover artist for the Red Wolf ongoing series, featuring Marvel’s first Native American hero. His work at Marvel included Werewolf by Night, Heroes Reborn, Sinister War, and Spirit Rider.
For IDW he did covers of The Fall of G.I. Joe, Onyx, Saucer State, Transformers: The World in Your Eyes, and Star Trek: Voyager – Seven’s Reckoning. At Valiant, he created covers for Divinity III: Stalinverse, Ninjak, Bloodshot, and Harbinger Renegade.
He wrote and drew stories for Moonshot Indigenous Comics Collection Vols. 1-3 for Inhabit Education Books/AIH Comics. His work has been displayed at the New York City Smithsonian, the Citizen M hotel in Seattle, and soon the Climate Pledge Arena where the Seattle Kraken hockey team will play.
