Horror writer and director James Wan, the filmmaker behind the Saw and Conjuring franchises, is rebooting The Munsters. The show is described as a horror series that “lives and breathes within the Universal Monsterverse” per the official logline. It is currently titled 1313 as a reference to the family’s address of 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

Wan is developing the show with Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines writer-director), who will also serve as showrunner, and Ingrid Bisu (Malignant co-writer). Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett will executive produce via Atomic Monster, and Anderson Beer will executive produce via Lab Brew.

Originally running from 1964 to ’66, The Munsters was a satire of both vintage horror movies and the typical family sitcoms with characters that were very clearly based on classic monsters. Herman, the dad, is a Frankenstein-like creature who worked at a funeral parlor; Lily, the mom, is a vampire; Edward, their pre-teen son is a werewolf; Grandpa, Lily’s father, is a 300-year-old mad scientist; and Marilyn, their niece, is the only normal Munster, and therefore the black sheep of the family. The show starred Fred Gwynne, Yvonne De Carlo, Al Lewis, Pat Priest, and Butch Patrick.

The series has been rebooted and revived several times, including movies, an animated series, and comics. Most recently, director and musician Rob Zombie put his signature spin on The Munsters with a movie in 2022.

1313 does not currently have a network or streaming service attached. The series does not have a cast yet.
