Scrooge McDuck, the wealthiest and most famous resident in Duckburg, and his rambunctious nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie are planning new adventures in an ongoing DuckTales comic series. The Dynamite Entertainment and Disney series is inspired by the original animated show, written by Brandon Montclare (Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur) and Italian artist Tommaso Ronda.
The original DuckTales show ran from 1987 to 1990, using the established history and style of earlier Disney duck stories and adapting it for a new generation. They were adapted into other mediums, like comic books and strips, video games, and another animated series.
“For months I’ve been working with a bunch of new collaborators to create some great DuckTales material... but now that it’s breaking news, I can’t help but think back 35 years,” Montclare said. “I was a kid watching DuckTales on TV, along with a pile of other cartoons, action movies, a mountain of action figures, and stacks on stacks of comic books. There was nothing I wanted more than to be in the comics biz when I grew up. As that dream became a reality, and I got smarter at stories, there’s an appreciation for the generations of influence that started with Carl Barks’ Uncle Scrooge comics and runs through many creative titans. So, our new comic is timeless and fit for all ages. There’s nostalgia for the audience that have enjoyed these characters for decades as well as inspiration for new readers. Because at the heart of DuckTales is adventure: anyone can go out their door or open a book and discover priceless treasure.”
The first story arc is focused on Uncle Scrooge and his nephews as they learn town secrets and find hidden treasures. While the main story sticks to DuckBurg, flashbacks will reveal some of Scrooge’s past adventures in exotic locales like mysterious islands. It will also feature some of DuckTales’s other characters like Launchpad, Magica De Spell, the Beagle Boys, Gyro Gearloose, Glomgold, Webby, and others.
DuckTales #1 will debut in comic shops on November 6, 2024. It comes with covers by Ivan Bigarella, Francesco Tomaselli, Carlo Cid Lauro, and Alan Quah, plus classic Disney art will appear on a special variant cover.
“What makes DuckTales unique is that it’s two stories in one comic: Huey, Dewey, and Louie are striking out on their first adventures, while the world famous Scrooge McDuck continues to seek treasure after an epic lifetime of expeditions,” editor Nate Cosby said. “The incredible stories that Brandon and Tomasso are creating will delight fans of the original animated series, and the classic comics by Carl Barks and Don Rosa!”
