The comic and pop culture collecting industries had a solid year in 2024 with multiple records set for sales of comics, original art, toys, and more. Below is a sample of the best sales, record breakers, and attention grabbers from comic and original art auctions that happened throughout 2024.
Superman continued to soar at the top of the secondary comic book market in 2024. The Man of Steel’s debut in Action Comics #1 saw two impressive sales with a CGC 8.5 Kansas City Pedigree selling for $6 million at Heritage and a CGC 5.5 Restored hit $379,579 at ComicConnect. Superman #1, which retells Superman’s origin and is his first self-titled book, had multiple strong sales, even for lower graded copies. Heritage sold a CGC 7.0 for $2.34 million, MyComicShop sold a CGC 2.0 for $260,000, ComicConnect sold a CGC 2.0 for $196,905, Hake’s Auctions sold a CGC 0.5 for $84,370, and MyComicShop sold a CGC 1.0 Restored for $50,000.
Batman was similarly a big seller in 2024. Sales of his introduction in Detective Comics #27 included a CGC 6.5 for $1.8 million and a CGC 7.0 Restored for $336,454 both at ComicConnect, and an NG coverless copy hit $97,000 at ComicLink. Batman #1, his first titular book that introduces the Joker and Catwoman had a CGC 0.5 realize $46,169 and a CGC 2.0 Restored saw $44,000, both at MyComicShop.
Spider-Man’s two biggest keys were leaders among Marvel’s books. Amazing Fantasy #15 CGC 5.5, featuring his first appearance, went for $54,605 at MyComicShop. The Wall Crawler’s first self-titled book, The Amazing Spider-Man #1, featuring the debuts of J. Jonah Jameson and Chameleon, saw a CGC 9.8 sell for $1.3 million at Heritage and a CGC 7.5 cleared $29,983 at Hake’s.
Team books featuring multiple big name characters saw several of the year’s top results. Fantastic Four #1 CGC 9.6, the book that introduced Marvel’s first family, sold for $2 million at Heritage and a CGC 8.5 totaled $160,300 at ComicConnect. The Brave and the Bold #28 CGC 9.6 with the first appearance of the Justice League saw $810,000 at Heritage. The Avengers #1 featuring the debut of the Avengers had a CGC 9.6 see $432,000 at Heritage and a CGC 9.4 realized $120,199 at ComicLink. ComicConnect sold a Giant-Size X-Men #1 CGC 9.9 with the first appearance of Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Thunderbird for $170,000. ComicLink sold a Brave and the Bold #54 CGC 9.8 featuring the Teen Titans’ debut for $100,000.
Big name character introductions continued with Wonder Woman’s debut in All Star Comics #8 CGC 9.4 selling for $1.5 million and Silver Age Flash Barry Allen’s introduction in Showcase #4 CGC 9.6 reached $900,000 at Heritage. Tales of Suspense #39 CGC 9.8, containing Iron Man’s first appearance, cleared $840,000 and Incredible Hulk #1 CGC 9.2 with the Hulk’s debut saw $825,000, both at Heritage.
Hake’s sold Captain America Comics #1 CGC 5.5 with the first appearance of Captain America, Bucky, and Red Skull for $172,221, and ComicLink sold Thor’s introduction in Journey Into Mystery #83 CGC 9.2 for $141,000. All-American Comics #16 CGC 8.0 Restored with the first appearance of Green Lantern Alan Scott went for $60,000 at MyComicShop, and Showcase #22 CGC 8.0 featuring the introduction of Silver Age Green Lantern Hal Jordan realized $56,433 at ComicLink.
Impressive sales of character debuts continued with Hawkeye’s introduction in Tales of Suspense #57 CGC 9.8 Curator Collection that brought $210,000 at ComicConnect (in a private sale). Kingpin’s debut in Amazing Spider-Man #50 CGC 9.8 totaled $125,000 at ComicLink. Marvel Comics #1 CGC 6.0 Restored with the introduction of Human Torch, Ka-Zar, and Angel cleared $115,000 at MyComicShop. All-American Comics #61 CGC 8.5 with Solomon Grundy’s first appearance reached $75,000 and Crime Patrol #15 CGC 9.8 featuring the Crypt Keeper’s debut brought $45,000, both at ComicLink.
Detective Comics #31 with the debut of Julie Madison, the Monk, and the Batplane saw a CGC 5.0 selling for $174,340 at ComicConnect and a CGC 1.0 totaled $50,000 at MyComicShop. Marvel Tales #1 CGC 1.0, which reprints the origins of characters like Spider-Man, Thor, and Iron Man, brought $163,300 at ComicConnect. Daring Mystery Comics #1 CGC 9.2 Windy City pedigree featuring the debuts of Fiery Mask, John Steele – Soldier of Fortune, Doc Denton, and Monako sold for $132,000 at ComicConnect.
Giant Comics Editions #12 CGC 8.0 featuring four St. John romance comics rebound hit $77,000 at MyComicShop, and Detective Comics #33 CGC 3.0 with Batman’s origin retold realized $48,750 at ComicLink. Police Comics #1 CGC 8.5 featuring Plastic Man’s introduction hit $40,000 at ComicLink, and Pep Comics #6 CGC 9.8 Edgar Church/Mile High pedigree (cover of the Shield) went for $37,000 at MyComicShop.
Original art sales were also impressive throughout 2024, including Rob Liefeld’s New Mutants #98 page 14 with Deadpool’s introduction that totaled $960,000 at Heritage. A Steve Ditko Spider-Man Marvel Masterwork pin-up that was never published and was signed by Stan Lee went for $590,000 at ComicLink. Jack Kirby’s original cover for the Fantastic Four Annual #11 sold for $241,500 at ComicConnect.
Frank Miller’s art was responsible for several of the biggest original art results of the year. His Daredevil #165 cover sold for $324,000, and the Batman: The Dark Knight Returns #2 story page 2 he did with Klaus Janson went for $288,000 at Heritage. The Daredevil #172 interior page by Miller and Janson featuring Daredevil, Kingpin, and Bullseye, totaled $104,075, and the cover of Moon Knight #12 that Miller and Al Milgrom created brought $47,105 at ComicConnect.
Wolverine was a popular character for original art collectors, like John Buscema’s Wolverine cover from his first solo comic series that went for $600,000 at Heritage. Wolverine #88 double-page spread by Adam Kubert with Wolverine and Deadpool starting their first fight sold for $54,050 at ComicConnect. An Iron Fist #12 page by John Byrne and Dave Cockrum with Wolverine battling Iron Fist totaled $39,962 at ComicConnect. Marc Silvestri’s Wolverine #37 cover reached $58,888 at ComicLink.
Iron Man was also a big hit in 2024, including Don Heck’s Tales of Suspense #39 art of Tony Stark donning the Iron Man armor for the first time that hammered for $552,000, and page 8 reached $504,000 at Heritage. Bob Layton’s Iron Man #147 cover saw $82,000 at ComicLink.
Heritage had multiple big sellers from the horror genre, led by Lee Elias’ Black Cat Mystery #50 cover for $840,000, Elias’ Tomb of Terror #15 cover for $300,000, and Johnny Craig’s The Haunt of Fear #15 cover for $264,000.
Jack Kirby art sales included Avengers #1 page 6 selling for $110,260 at ComicLink and a Kirby-signed page from Strange Tales Annual #2 on which he collaborated with Steve Ditko realized $70,150 at ComicConnect. John Romita Sr.’s cover of Captain America #164 sold for $105,800 at ComicConnect and his Captain America #148 cover went for $50,500 at ComicLink.
Heritage sold George Pérez’s Avengers #161 cover featuring Captain America, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, the Vision, and Wonder Man for $288,000. ComicConnect sold Action Comics #686 art, featuring an image of Superman’s dead body from the classic 1993 comic “Funeral for a Friend, Part 6” for $80,000 via a private sale. ComicLink sold George Pérez’s Marvel Two-in-One #42 cover for $55,000, Barry Windsor-Smith’s X-O Manowar #4 cover for $53,255, and Jim Lee’s Uncanny X-Men #271 half-splash for $52,301.
J. Scott Campbell and Alex Garner’s Gen 13 #5 double-page spread of the entire team reached $35,659 at ComicConnect. Hake’s sold Bill Sienkiewicz’s Moon Knight: First of Khonshu #6 original cover painting for $35,046, Sam Kieth’s Marvel Comics Presents #99 original cover of Ghost Rider for $29,854, and Scott McCloud’s Zot! #1 original cover for $21,417.
Other comic-related art sales included Alex Ross’ DC Comics: Unleashed: 2005 Upper Deck, Vs. System Justice League of America card case painting that realized $65,777 at ComicLink. Carl Burgos’ Human Torch design illustration from 1939, which is the earliest-known illustration of the character, brought $38,583 at ComicConnect. Greg Hildebrandt’s 1994 Marvel Masterpieces Thanos card art sold for $50,000 at ComicLink. Alex Ross’ Amazing Fantasy #15 cover recreation original art for Hero Illustrated #6 reached $32,450 at Hake’s.
