Cully Hamner is known for creating the comic Red, co-creating the current Blue Beetle Jaime Reyes, and his work on The Question. His DC art credits include Batman and Superman titles, Blue Beetle: Graduation Day and Blue and Gold. His Marvel work includes providing covers for Spider-Man titles, Black Panther vs. Deadpool, M.O.D.O.K., and Alien. Hamner’s art has also appeared in BOOM!’s Something is Killing the Children and Grim. Between meeting fans at Baltimore Comic-Con, Hamner talked to Scoop about his experience at the con.

Scoop: Are you having fun at Baltimore Comic-Con?
Cully Hamner (CH): So far so good. There’s still time to mess it up, but it’s all good.

Scoop: What are fans most excited to talk about this weekend?
CH: I always get a lot of Batman. People always want Batman. I feel like She-Hulk is a character people are really interested in right now because of the TV show.

Scoop: Are you getting a lot of requests for prints, or the original art and sketches?
CH: All of the above. People are buying a lot of prints, but my commission list is full and it’s a lot of original art too.

Scoop: How have your convention experiences been since COVID-19 changed the con scene?
CH: Well, I didn’t do cons, I guess for the first couple of years. This is really the first year I’ve been back doing any cons. I try to be careful. People seem to be pretty respectful if you want to wear a mask, so that’s all good. Not a lot of handshaking like their used to be. And less people are drinking. If people are drinking, everybody’s handshaking and hugging – all that kind of stuff. Generally, it seems like it’s fairly back to normal at this point.

Scoop: How do you think Baltimore compares to other shows?
CH: Oh, it’s one of my favorites. It’s one of my two or three favorite shows to do because it’s so much more comic-focused than what a lot of conventions have become. A lot of shows called “comic cons” now really seem to have very little to do with comics, and Baltimore is one of the ones that does have a lot to do with comics, and I like that. I’ve known Marc and Shelly Nathan, who run the show for years at this point. They’re like family. It’s a good show.

Scoop: What are you working on now?
CH: Well, I’m working on a project that has not been announced – a five-issue miniseries for Image Comics. I’m doing a ton of covers, I’m doing covers for the Joe Fix-It series at Marvel, I’m doing a lot of covers in the Batman office at DC. I did an Alien cover recently. Doing a lot of covers. I’m probably going to be doing something for Todd McFarlane Productions in the next few months. I’ve got a pretty full dance card right now.
