As a writer and creator, Starlin has worked on many of the most noteworthy creations in comics. He is behind Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, and created Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, and Thanos. He has had runs on Marvel’s Captain Marvel, Warlock, Silver Surfer, Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, and Infinity Crusade, as well as DC’s Batman, The Weird, and Cosmic Odyssey. More recently, he has worked on Stormwatch, Green Lantern: Mongul, and Thanos: The Infinity Revelation. Starlin took a break from meeting fans at Baltimore Comic-Con to chat with Scoop.

Scoop: Are you having a good show?
Jim Starlin (JS):
Oh yeah, I always enjoy Baltimore. It’s actually my favorite convention.

Scoop: Why is that?
JS:
It’s not too big, just about everyone I know in the business comes here, and it’s a good way to connect. It’s a nice laidback show. It’s not as frenetic or crazy as New York or San Diego. Whenever I can, I do it.

Scoop: Which characters or titles are fans most excited to talk to you about this weekend?
JS:
It’s all Thanos and Batman: Death in the Family, and we get some Dreadstar there because the book is coming out now. Most of the time it’s Thanos.

Scoop: Are people gravitating more toward sketches or getting books signed?
JS:
Oh, I only do book signings and the posters. I’m not any good at drawing at conventions anymore. I blew my hand up about three years ago in a compressed air accident. So I don’t draw at conventions. In fact at home, I only draw in the morning because come noon, my hand starts stiffening up and I turn to the computer then.

Scoop: How have your con experiences been since the COVID pandemic lockdowns ended?
JS:
Nice. It’s good to be back at it. We were cooped up in the houses long enough. Everybody seems happy to be here. Strangely enough, the “irate fan” we used to run into, we don’t seem to run into anymore. I think everyone is a little more laidback.

Scoop: Of all the things you’ve worked on, does anything stand out as the title or story arc that you are most proud of?
JS:
Death of Captain Marvel and my first run on Dreadstar.

Scoop: What are you working on now?
JS: Lots of Dreadstar. This is the first of five graphic novels I have planned out. The second one, we’re going to start a Kickstarter on in two weeks.
