Billy Kaplan, aka Wiccan, is a Marvel hero with a magically complex past and a life surrounded by other superpowered beings. His husband is the superhero Hulkling, his twin brother is the superhero Speed, and his parents are the Scarlet Witch and Vision.

He was originally created as Billy Maximoff by Steve Englehart and Richard Howell in The Vision and the Scarlet Witch #12 (September 1986). Then Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung redesigned him as Wiccan and introduced him in Young Avengers #1 (April 2005).

Billy and his brother, Thomas, were created by Wanda Maximoff when she tapped into a great magical source to give her the family she so desired. The happy family was not to last, and the twins were kidnapped by Master Pandemonium on the orders of Mephisto. The demon lord claimed that when he was defeated by Franklin Richards, his essence was broken into pieces and Wanda had unintentionally used two of them to create her sons. Mephisto reclaimed those pieces of his essence, wiping the boys from existence.

Eventually, the twins’ spirits found new hosts, only they were now in different families and didn’t know who they were originally. Billy was now Billy Kaplan, the son of psychologist Rebecca and cardiologist Jeff Kaplan. He idolized superheroes, especially the Avengers, and would often hang out at the gates of Avengers Mansion. Billy was often bullied at school, and after being injured by his tormentors, Billy met the Scarlet Witch. She advised him to stand up to them and touched his head to heal him.

When Billy witnessed another kid being bullied, he intervened and used his magically abilities for the first time, almost killing the bully in the process. After the incident, Billy learned that he could cast spells by chanting what he wanted to happen, he could fly, and create lightning. Since that first incident, Billy has also uncovered the abilities to warp reality, generate force fields, teleportation, astral projection, telepathy, telekinesis, and more.

A few years later, Scarlet Witch was under the influence of Doctor Doom, and she attacked the Avengers. She killed Vision and destroyed Avengers Mansion, then once they were able to stop her, the remaining Avengers disbanded. When he was still alive, Vision had created a protocol to recruit a team of young heroes who were connected to the Avengers. Billy was chosen for the team, taking the codename Asgardian. He was joined by future husband, Hulkling, team leader, Iron Lad, and later his brother joined the team (though at the time, they did not know of their connection).

After their first adventures, Billy decided to change his superhero name to Wiccan. Since joining the Young Avengers, he has also been a member of Strikeforce, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the team he idolized as a kid, the Avengers.
