Manga creator Osamu Akimoto will be ending his long-running series Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen Mae Hashutsujo (This is the police station in front of Kameari Park in Katsushika Ward), known better as simply Kochikame, after 40 years. Kochikame has been the longest-running manga in Japan and will end with exactly 200 volumes when it concludes on September 17, 2016.

The story follows the adventures of a middle-aged policeman, Kankichi Ryotsu. Kochikame first debuted in 1976 and has since sold more than 150 million copies. Multiple live-action films and anime adaptations have been released in the four decades since it first launched, as well as stage plays. A brand-new one-hour anime special will air on September 18, the day after the manga wraps.

Akimoto has stated that he has ideas for his next work, but nothing concrete has been announced.
