In 2010, Senior Overstreet Advisor Jon McClure introduced the term “Type 1A Price Variant” in his article “A History of Publisher Experimentation and Variant Comic Books” in The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #40.

Those variant comics are increasing in popularity with collectors, paving the way for a comprehensive guide.

McClure, fellow Senior Overstreet Advisor Doug Sulipa, Overstreet Advisors Bill Alexander and Paul Clairmont, and Historian Angelo Virone, in collaboration with Benjamin Nobel of the Rare Comics Blog, have announced the release of The 2018 Price Guide for 1980s Marvel & DC Newsstand Canadian Cover Price Variants (Type 1A).

“Type 1A cover price variants need to have their own value listings broken out in the hobby’s best interests. With the release of our guide, collectors have a new and valuable tool in understanding a hot new trend, some crazy scarce books in grade, and a roadmap for spotting some terrific investment opportunities,” McClure said.

“I have been selling Canadian Newsstand Cover Price Variants to completionists for nearly 20 years and have talked about them in my Overstreet Market Reports since about 2001,” Sulipa added. “I have sold over 5,000 of them to collectors around the world and can attest to the fact once variant collectors have been learned of their existence, there is a constant demand for them, among informed collectors. Now that they are more often recognized by CGC in their census and on the slabs, the demand is growing at an accelerated rate.”

“I am proud to have had the opportunity to collaborate with a group of some of the top minds in our hobby in this niche,” Nobel said. “The intersection of cover price variants with newsstand exclusivity makes for a demonstrably more rare group of comics from the 1980s that collectors are growing to prefer.”
