Maleficent is back and on another magical mission in the first trailer for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. The new movie picks up a few years after the first film, with Aurora and Maleficent both aiming to protect the magical lands.

Despite the queen’s claim that, “this is no fairy tale,” the trailer treats viewers to a mix of beautiful and frightening magic. It quickly recaps the first movie before showing a tense stare down between Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent and the queen, played by Michelle Pfeiffer. The exchange quickly poses the question – who is the villain in this story?

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil premieres in theaters on October 18, 2019. It is directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) with script by Linda Woolverton (Maleficent). Along with Jolie, Elle Fanning returns as Princess Aurora, along with Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville, and Sam Riley.
