Comic book artist Frank McLaughlin, who worked at Charlton Comics, DC, and Marvel, died in his hometown of Stratford, Connecticut. He was 84.

He is known for his work at Charlton where he began his career as an inker in the early 1960s with his first confirmed work in Reptisaurus #8. Soon after, he became Charlton’s art director, working on titles like Captain Atom and Beetle.

In 1965 he and writer Joe Gill created the martial arts superhero Judomaster in Special War Series #4. McLaughlin drew on his own study of martial arts to bring the character to life and eventually took on writing duties as well.

His work in comics extended to DC, Marvel, Archie, and Valiant, contributing to major titles like Adventure Comics, Captain America, Defenders, and Justice League. McLaughlin taught art at Paier College of Art in Hamden, CT, as well as at Guy Gilchrist’s Cartoonist’s Academy.
