Actor Danny Goldman, known for The Smurfs and Young Frankenstein, died on Sunday, April 12, 2020. He was 80 years old.

His agent Doug Ely confirmed the news via a Facebook post, writing, “It’s with great sadness that I must tell you that Danny Goldman has passed away. He passed peacefully at home today amongst family and friends, after having suffered a couple of strokes around New Year’s. Danny was truly one of a kind. He always had strong opinions and didn’t mind telling you about them. He was incredibly funny. He loved to root for the little guy and help wherever he could. He had a huge heart. We lost a good one today. He will be missed.”

In 1974, he portrayed a persistent med student in the cult hit, Young Frankenstein, questioning the title character during the opening scene. He joined the voice cast of The Smurfs in 1981, providing the voice of Brainy Smurf on the beloved animated series until 1989.

A New York native, Goldman started acting in the late 1960s. One of his earliest roles was in the movie MASH and an arc on the sitcom, The Good Life. Then he did guest spots on popular series like The Partridge Family, Room 222, Columbo, Baretta, and Chico and the Man.

During his tenure on The Smurfs, Goldman guest starred on The Love Boat, Cagney & Lacey, and The Golden Girls. After The Smurfs, he loaned his voice to Batman: The Animated Series, Mighty Max, and Robot Chicken. He also guest starred on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, The King of Queens, and Criminal Minds. In addition to acting, he spent 30 years as a casting director for commercials.
