Actor Richard Herd, known for Seinfeld, T.J. Hooker, and several other titles, died on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 of cancer-related causes at his home in Los Angeles. Herd was 87 years old.

The stern-faced character actor racked up 155 credits over a nearly 50-year career. His notable roles included playing Captain Sheridan, William Shatner’s boss on T.J. Hooker and he played Mr. Wilhelm on Seinfeld.

A Boston native, Herd was born on September 26, 1932. His film and TV career began in 1970 in Hercules in New York, followed by appearances on Kojak and The Rockford Files, and he had notable early roles in All the President’s Men as an ex-CIA agent and in The China Syndrome as the scheming chairman.

In the early ‘80s, Herd was in M*A*S*H, Private Benjamin, and Dallas. In ’83, he was in the sci-fi miniseries V as Supreme Commander John and the sequel a year later. He was also in The A-Team, Knight Rider, Dynasty, Hill Street Blues, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Gleaming the Cube, and The Golden Girls.

Starting in ’93, he appeared in three Star Trek series, playing the Klingon L’Kor on The Next Generation, and later as Admiral Owen Paris on Voyager and Renegades. At this time, Herd also played Admiral William Noyce for 12 episodes of SeaQuest 2032.

His late ‘90s roles were in ER, Sgt. Bilko, Walker, Texas Ranger, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Diagnosis Murder, and Caroline in the City. In the 2000s, Herd continued doing guest spots on JAG, The O.C., NYPD Blue, Ghost Whisperer, and Desperate Housewives.

Herd’s later appearances were in Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, Rizzoli & Isles, Get Out, Hawaii Five-0, and The Silent Natural.
