Henry Johnson served in World War I on the Western Front as a member of the 369th Infantry Regiment, an African-American unit that became the Harlem Hellfighters. During sentry duty, he fought a German raiding party even though he was seriously injured. Johnson became the first American to get France’s highest award for bravery, the Croix de Guerre with a golden palm.

The Association of the United States Army has made a free comic about Johnson available. It can be read online or downloaded as a PDF.

The AUSA website has several other free comics commemorating Medal of Honor winners like Daniel Inouye, Sal Giunta, Audie Murphy, and others.
