Actor Alex Cord, known for the series Airwolf, died on Monday, August 9, 2021. He was 88 years old.

In Airwolf, the action series about a pilot who uses an advanced helicopter on his missions, Cord played the mysterious eyepatch-wearing character Michael Coldsmith Briggs III/Archangel. He starred in its entire three-season run from 1984 to 1986.

Cord was born on May 3, 1933 in Floral Park, New York. He was struck with polio when he was 12 and learned to ride horses as a form of therapy. Once recovered, he studied at New York University and the American Shakespeare Theatre.

His onscreen acting work began in 1961 with a guest spot on Laramie. Early in his career he appeared on several TV shows, such as Frontier Circus, Naked City, and Route 66. In the late ‘60s he appeared in movies like Synanon, Stagecoach, and Stiletto.

In the ‘70s, Cord was in Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible, Police Story, Police Woman, The Six Million Dollar Man, W.E.B., and The Love Boat. Before and during Airwolf, he was a guest star on Cassie & Co. and Fantasy Island.

After the series ended, Cord was in Murder, She Wrote, War of the Worlds, Roots of Evil, Walker, Texas Ranger, and his final role was in Fire from Below in 2009.
