Quantcast

Batgirl’s bestie has been cast. Ivory Aquino is heading to the DCEU as Alysia Yeoh, best friend to Barbara Gordon/Batgirl.

Aquino, who is transgender, will play the first openly trans character in a DC live-action movie. She is known for starring in the miniseries When We Rise as trans rights activist Cecilia Chung. In 2019 she starred in Lingua Franca, and since has done guest spots on New Amsterdam, FBI: Most Wanted, and Blue Bloods.

Alysia was created by Gail Simone and Ardian Syaf in 2011’s Batgirl Vol. 4 #1. She and Barbara met when the latter searched for a roommate when she decided it was time to move out of her father’s house. The two quickly connect and form a close bond that survives Barbara keeping her Batgirl identity a secret and Alysia briefly dating Barbra’s psychopathic brother James.

Batgirl will star Leslie Grace as the titular heroine. Michael Keaton is returning to his role of Bruce Wayne/Batman that he originated over 30 years ago in Batman. J.K. Simmons is back as Commissioner Jim Gordon, which he first played in 2017’s Justice League. Brendan Fraser is playing the villain Firefly/Garfield Lynns.

The movie is set to stream exclusively on HBO Max. The premiere date has yet to be announced.
