In 2012, a group of voice actors got together for a game of Dungeons & Dragons. Now, nine years later, the story they created is being turned into the R-rated animated series The Legend of Vox Machina.

The adventure began when Liam O’Brien (voice of Gollum in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor) wanted to play D&D for his birthday. Matt Mercer (voice of Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil 6), who a reputation for hosting popular D&D campaigns, became the Dungeon Master. From there, they brought in fellow voice actors Laura Bailey (Marvel’s Avengers), Taliesin Jaffe (Injustice 2), Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us), Marisha Ray (Far Cry New Dawn), Sam Riegel (Star Wars: The Bad Batch), and Travis Willingham (Spider-Man: Miles Morales).

The group of voice acting D&D players became Critical Role. They have since created roleplaying stories with livestreamed events, a podcast, and now an animated series.

The Legend of Vox Machina is based on their first livestreamed tabletop RPG. It is set in the medieval fantasy realm of Exandria where half-elf ranger Vex’ahlia (Bailey), gunslinger Percival de Rolo III (Jaffe), gnome cleric Pike Trickfoot (Johnson), half-elf rogue Vax’ildan (O’Brien), half-elf druid Keyleth (Ray), gnome bard Scanlan Shorthalt (Riegel), and barbarian Grog Strongjaw (Willingham) go on a quest to save the realm.

The animation is being handled by Titmouse and character designer Phil Bourassa. The series will stream on Amazon.
