The tournament continues! New Line has announced that the Mortal Kombat sequel is happening. The sequel was confirmed about nine months after the film was released in theaters and on HBO Max. Many of the stars from the first movie are expected to return for the sequel.

Jeremy Slater, the lead writer on the Marvel Disney+ series Moon Knight, will write the sequel. He confirmed his involvement by tweeting, “Beyond excited to be joining this team! We’re building something bigger and better and bloodier that’s going to blow people’s minds.”

Stars Lewis Tan (who played Cole Young), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), and Mehcad Brooks (Jax) also expressed their enthusiasm for the sequel news.

Mortal Kombat introduced Cole Young as a fledgling MMA fighter who learns that he is destined to compete in Mortal Kombat and later discovers that he is the descendant of Hanzo Hasashi, better known as Scorpion. Cole joins Sonya Blade, Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), and Jax as Earth’s champions to fight Shang Tsung’s (Chin Han) warriors from Outworld for the fate of the universe.

The movie also featured Kano (Josh Lawson), Subzero (Joe Taslim), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Mileena (Sisi Stringer), and Kung Lao (Max Huang). Some of those characters died in the first movie, but this is Mortal Kombat, so their resurrections wouldn’t be too surprising.

Mortal Kombat ended with Earth’s heroes hunting for fellow warriors, including Cole heading for Hollywood to find Johnny Cage.
