Ryan Reynolds released a video that provides an update on Deadpool 3 and one razor sharp casting announcement. It’s been a while since there’s been any news on the third installment, and first under Disney as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The big reveals: that the movie will be released on September 6, 2024, and that Hugh Jackman is costarring as Wolverine.

In the video released on Twitter, Reynolds talks about making Deadpool’s first entry into the MCU special, to stay true to the character, and standout on its own. As Reynolds narrates the struggles of finding the story, the video shows a montage of the actor walking through the woods, typing, and working out. After admitting that all the work has resulted in “nothing,” Jackman enters the video and Reynolds asks if he’d like to play Wolverine in the new Deadpool. Jackman responds with a casual “Yeah. Sure, Ryan.”

A day later, Reynolds shared another video, this one titled “Deadpool Update, Part Hugh.” He and Jackman sit on the couch together to answer questions about the film. But just as they are about to reveal the plot of Deadpool 3, Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” starts playing, leaving the audience to watch the pair comically pantomime a violent fight.

This will be Jackman’s first time playing Wolverine since he starred in Logan in 2017. He and Reynolds shared the screen as Deadpool and Wolverine once before in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. That movie was Reynold’s first performance as Wade Wilson/Deadpool, which was a much maligned version of the Merc with the Mouth (in that case without a mouth). That version is largely ignored in the Deadpool film series, minus a gag at the second movie’s conclusion when Reynolds time-traveled back to kill that version of the character.

Shawn Levy, who recently directed Reynolds in Free Guy, is helming the project. The script is being written by Bob’s Burgers alums Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, with Reynolds co-writing the movie. So far, the only other confirmed cast member is Leslie Uggams as Blind Al.
