The Last of Us, HBO Max’s breakout hit based on the survival video game, is heading for home release. Just after the show wrapped the first season, HBO announced that it will be available for purchase in digital format on April 11, 2023, and on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on July 18.

The home video releases will feature nearly three hours of special features, including three featurettes. In The Last of Us: Stranger Than Fiction featurette, cast and filmmakers are joined by experts in microbiology, parasitology, and survival to discuss the fungus and apocalypse in the series. Controllers Down: Adapting The Last of Us is a look at how the video game was adapted for the screen. From Levels to Live Action showcases how the series utilized and expanded popular video game moments.

Set 20 years after modern civilization has fallen, The Last of Us follows hardened survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal) who is hired to take 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a quarantine zone. Though it started as a simple job, their perilous journey across dangerous territory bonds the two as they most rely on each other for survival.

The Last of Us quickly became a success with HBO’s second largest debut after House of the Dragon. Those numbers continued to grow, and by the time the season finale aired, viewership was up 75% from the first episode. The series was renewed for a second season after only two episodes of season one had aired.

The show also stars Anna Torv, Lamar Johnson, Melanie Lynskey, Nico Parker, Merle Dandridge, Keivonn Woodard, Jeffrey Pierce, John Getz, Gabriel Luna, Storm Reid, Ashley Johnson, Troy Baker, and several others.
