Major League Baseball catcher Hobie Landrith died on April 6, 2023, at the age of 93.
Landrith had a 14-year career in the Majors, playing for seven different ball clubs. He was the Mets’ first pick in the National League expansion draft in 1961. During the course of his career, Landrith had a batting average of .233, he hit 34 home runs, and had 203 RBIs.
Landrith was born on March 16, 1930, in Decatur, Illinois. He was discovered by the Cincinnati Reds after leading his high school team to a second place finish in the 1948 National Junior Amateur Federation Tournament.
He joined the Reds squad in 1950 and played for them until ’55. He was with the Chicago Cubs in ’56, the St. Louis Cardinals in ’57 and ’58, and the San Francisco Giants in ’59 to ’61. Then he was with the Mets in ’62, the Baltimore Orioles in ’62 and ’63, and finished his playing career with the Washington Senators in ’63.
