TV, film, and Broadway star Jonathan Groff is ready to meet the Doctor. BBC announced that Groff has joined Doctor Who in what is described as a key role.
The actor who recently faced the apocalypse in Knock at the Cabin, is also known for his starring role in Netflix’s Mindhunter and on Broadway in Hamilton.
“This is an incredible coup, and a great honor, to get such a huge star striding on to our set,” Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies said in a statement. “So strap on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!”
Groff will appear on Doctor Who opposite the Ncuti Gatwa as the newly regenerated Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson as his traveling companion Ruby Sunday.
“I am so thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T. Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role!” Groff said.
The long-running British sci-fi show, which debuted in 1963, will return in November with three 60th anniversary episodes. David Tennant and Catherine Tate, who played fan favorite Tenth Doctor and companion Donna Noble, respectively, are starring in the trio of anniversary episodes. Gatwa’s first episode will arrive during the winter holiday season.
