Comic-Con announced that Beth Accomando and Scott Dunbier have been named the 2023 Clampett Humanitarian Award winners. It will be presented by Clampett’s daughter Ruth Clampett on Friday, July 21, 2023, during the Eisner Awards ceremony at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel in San Diego, CA.

Accomando has 30 years of experience as a film critic, and since 1997, she has covered indie and international films and pop culture for National Public Radio. She does volunteer work for the Film Geeks at the Digital Gym Cinema whose goal is to promote boundary-pushing genre films and she is the co-founder of Horrible Imaginings Film Festival. She works to give San Diego creators and events attention by doing interviews and covering local events.

Dunbier led the crowdfunding campaign for Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds anthology, which raised almost $175,000 for Ukrainian refugees. The book featured contributions from comic creators like Alex Ross, Arthur Adams, Bill Sienkiewicz, Walt Simonson, Jill Thompson, Howard Chaykin, Stan Sakai, Colleen Doran, Matt Wagner, Sergio Aragonés, Louise Simonson, June Brigman, and others. Dunbier has been IDW’s Special Projects Editor since 2008 where he has led the publication of their Artist’s Edition line.

Comic-Con’s Humanitarian Award was named for animator Bob Clampett, who created the TV series Beany and Cecil, designed characters like Porky Pig and Tweety Bird, and directed 84 classic Warner Brothers cartoons. He was a regular guest at Comic-Con, then after his death in ’84, the award was created to celebrate people in comics and related fields who help others.
