Patrick Bateman has returned his video tapes, turned on some Huey Lewis music, and is putting on his raincoat. Sumerian is publishing an American Psycho comic based on the 2000 movie starring Christian Bale, which is an adaptation of the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis.
The four-issue series covers two timeframes: the first will present a new perspective on Patrick’s original murder spree, and the other is set in the present with a new killer. The story in the current time will introduce Charlie Carruthers, a social media obsessed psychopath who goes on her own killing spree.
The last name Carruthers is likely a clue about Charlie’s background. In the movie, Luis Carruthers is one of Patrick Bateman’s coworkers who the killer almost dispatches in the bathroom until the former admits his romantic feelings for the latter. Patrick also happens to be having an affair with Luis’ fiancée Courtney, which could mean that young Charlie is actually Patrick’s daughter, not Luis’ kid.
The American Psycho comic is written by Massive Publishing founder Michael Calero (Quested), with art by Piotr Kowalski (The Witcher), and colors by Brad Simpson (Stray Dogs). The first issue arrives in comic shops on October 11, 2023.
