Longtime Marvel artist Dan Green, who was known for his work on Uncanny X-Men, has passed away at the age of 70.
Green was born on November 26, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan. His comics career began in the early 1970s at DC, where he penciled back-up stories in Tarzan and other books. He made his debut at Marvel as the inker on Jim Starlin’s pencils for Captain Marvel and he finished Sal Buscema’s breakdowns in Defenders #14.
In 1977, he took over as the regular inker on Iron Fist with penciler John Byrne, starting with issue 14. The pair worked together on Power Man and the Iron Fist and Avengers, and Green worked with penciler Herb Trimpe on Godzilla and with Gene Colan on Doctor Strange.
He became the regular inker on Avengers, working with Colan, Carmine Infantino, and Bob Hall. In the mid-1980s Green started his run doing finishes on Uncanny X-Men with John Romita Jr., Marc Silvestri, and others, for a period of six years.
At this time, Green also painted the graphic novel, Doctor Strange: Shamballa, and after finishing Uncanny X-Men, he and Silvestri moved over to Wolverine for issues 31-57. In 1993, Romita Jr. and Green returned to Uncanny X-Men, working together for 20 issues, starting with #300. Green had another run on Wolverine, had a run on Spectacular Spider-Man, inked Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, and the Hulk relaunch in ’99.
Going back to DC, he contributed to Deadman, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Rose and Thorn, and JLA. When DC launched the New 52, Green inked Animal Man #1, Supergirl #1, and issues of All-Star Western, Wonder Woman, and Legion of Super-Heroes.
