Comic book luminaries Howard Chaykin and Mark Waid will share their 90-plus years of combined comic industry knowledge with the next generation of creators.
The Comic Book U all-day seminar on the craft and process of creating comics will be led by Chaykin (creator of American Flagg!) and Waid (writer of Kingdom Come). The seven-hour class includes segments on comic creation, a catered lunch, take-home supplies and lessons, and a networking event at the end of the day.
It will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the Bruin Reception Room of Ackerman Hall. The seminar is limited to 120 attendees and tickets are $150.
“With each passing year, more and more beginning artists and writers dream of working in comics,” Waid said. “This is an exciting opportunity to teach them what we’ve learned about this unique craft, and we’re eager to pass along the tools and techniques they’ll need to know.”
“For the past 15 years, I have done workshops for the major comic book publishers in the USA, as well as for film studies classes overseas,” Chaykin said. “These lectures on graphic narrative address skill sets that apply not only to comics but to all visual media, and I’ve been gratified by the response.”
Produced by 7 Lafayette Speakers Bureau, an agency that represents writers and artists, this is just the first installment of Comic Book U. Future seminars will take place at academic venues and comic conventions, including Albuquerque Comic Con and Galaxy Con events. Upcoming Comic Book U classes will be announced on their website.
