Frank Miller’s Dark Knight has set another auction record. The pages were part of Heritage’s International Original Art and Anime Auction on October 6-8, 2023, which realized $3,596,570.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns two-page spread in which Joker snaps his neck to make it look like Batman killed him sold for $550,000. They are now the most expensive story pages from the book and only the cover to the first issue has sold for more.

“We knew the moment we saw those Dark Knight Returns pages that we had something likely to set an auction record – they’re as stunning as they are significant,” Heritage’s Director of International Comic Art and Anime Olivier Delflas said. “We were honored to offer them in an auction that proved to be our most successful since this category debuted in 2018. It's always a thrill to be a part of comic book history.”

Another significant moment in an influential book set a record when the Comedian’s murder in the first issue of Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons realized $115,625. The page was bought in 1988 and thought lost until it was recently discovered in Paris. It set a record for a story page from Watchmen and its price for the series is only eclipsed by the cover to Watchmen #1.

The Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man swung into action with two six-figure sales. A John Romita Sr. and Mike Esposito Amazing Spider-Man #52 page pitting Spidey against the Kingpin hammered for $137,500. Steve Ditko’s Amazing Spider-Man #36 page of Spider-Man going against the Looter cleared $100,000.

Auction highlights include John Byrne and Terry Austin’s X-Men #129 page 7 from the start of the Hellfire Club story that went for $90,625; Uderzo’s Astérix Légionnaire #10 page 35 featuring Asterix, Obelix, and Julius Caesar brought $93,750; and Enrico Marini’s La Marque du Diable #1 wraparound cover that began the cloak and dagger Scorpion series reached $57,500.
