George Miller’s world of high octane races for survival is speeding through the desert with another movie. Warner Bros. Pictures released the first trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a prequel starring the breakout character from 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

Anya Taylor-Joy is stepping into the role of Imperator Furiosa originated by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. The prequel will follow her journey from a child taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers to becoming the tough war captain. The trailer also teases Chris Hemsworth’s debut as the violent and brutal Dementos and the return of Fury Road villain Immortan Joe.

Miller directed the film, and co-wrote it with Nick Lathouris. Nathan Jones, who played Rictus Erectus in Fury Road, is back for the prequel. It also stars Tom Burke, Angus Sampson, and Daniel Webber.

Furiosa is the fifth entry in Miller’s Mad Max franchise, which began in 1979. Mel Gibson starred in the first three installments, including Mad Max 2 in 1981 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985. Fury Road was released 30 years later and scored ten Academy Award nominations for many technical categories, as well as Best Picture and Best Director.

Furiosa will speed into theaters, including an IMAX release, on May 24, 2024.
