Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is attacking the competition in theaters with an $80 million opening weekend at the domestic box office. The movie made $114 million internationally for a global weekend total of $194 million.

The movie had the fifth biggest Easter weekend opening of all time. It earned significantly more than the prerelease expectations, which projected a $45-55 million opening in the US. The movie came close to that amount on opening day with $37 million.

Godzilla x Kong is the fifth installment in the MonsterVerse franchise, which began with Godzilla in 2014, then Kong: Skull Island in ’17, Godzilla: King of the Monsters in ’19, and Godzilla vs. Kong in ’21.

In Godzilla x Kong, Ilene Andrews has discovered a signal, which Kong has also sensed. A team of humans and Kong travel to the world deep within the Earth where they find an army of giant apes who appear to be readying for war. Despite their aversion to each other, Godzilla and Kong (sporting a robotic arm) work together to stop the impending threat.

Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle returned for the sequel, joined by franchise newcomers Dan Stevens, Fala Chen, and Rachel House. Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard returned to helm the new movie.
