Robot Monster, the cult classic movie is getting a spinoff graphic novel anthology, Robot Monster Comics in 3-D. The hardcover tome is available for preorder via a Kickstarter campaign.

The 1953 film begins by showing images from horror and sci-fi comics that served as inspiration for the movie. Robot Monster Comics in 3-D embraces that spirit by continuing the adventures of Ro-Man, Great Guidance, and Johnny.

3-D Film Archive and its President Bob Furmanek, the group that restored the movie for its 70th anniversary, is heading this project. Veteran comics editor and writer Paul Castiglia (Archie’s Weird Mysteries, Sonic the Hedgehog) is editing and contributing stories. Greg “Johnny” Moffett, the last living cast member of the movie, is involved with the graphic novel by providing story plots and autographed bookplates. The interior pages of the book are presented in 3-D, via the work of 3-D graphics and cartoonist Charles Barnard.

“The enthusiastic response to our Robot Monster restoration was unprecedented,” Furmanek said. “Watching audiences go wild at live screenings inspired me to reach out to my good friend Paul Castiglia to see what else we could do with these charismatic characters.”

“What happened to Ro-Man before the events of the movie… and what happened after? Did he go on to conquer other worlds? Did he retire? Did he find true love? And what of the family? The possibilities are endless, and we’ll be presenting some of those ‘what ifs’ here,” Castiglia said.

Writers on the project are headed by Harold Buchholz (writer-producer, Mystery Science Theater 3000), Owen Kline (writer-director, Funny Pages movie), Tom Hall (co-creator, writer Robot 13), Chris Well (horror podcaster, novelist), and Carl Scheckel (comics historian). Contributing artists are Chris Allan, Glenn Whitmore, Ron Williams, Jesus Marquez, Simone Arena, Erica Well, Nikki Powers, and Marley Starr.

The project is seeking backers on Kickstarter until May 9, 2024.
