Residents in the rural area of Appalachia are in danger as a harbinger for the devil goes to work in Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Starring Jack Kesy (12 Strong) as Hellboy, the film is based on the comic of the same name by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola with artist Richard Corben.

The trailer’s serene opening carries a troubling undertone when Hellboy notes that it “smells like death.” Set in Appalachia, the wilderness hides the terrifying Crooked Man who causes chaos, like a woman being bitten by a snake while levitating, a swarm of insects, a person on fire, and more frightening imagery.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is set in the 1950s when Hellboy teams up with a rookie BPRD agent (played by Adeline Rudolph, who starred in Netflix’s Resident Evil series) to stop the Crooked Man from gathering souls.

Mignola co-wrote the script with Christopher Golden (who wrote the recent Slayers: A Buffyverse Story podcast series), and it is directed by Brian Taylor (Crank). The movie also stars Jefferson White, Leah McNamara, Joseph Marcell, Hannah Margetson, and Martin Bassindale as the Crooked Man.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is the fourth film featuring the hero who protects the world from supernatural threats. The character made his big screen debut in 2004 with Ron Perlman in the starring role and Guillermo Del Toro as the director. The pair returned for Hellboy II: The Golden Army in 2008. The character was rebooted in 2019’s Hellboy starring David Harbour.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man will arrive in theaters sometime in 2024.
