For the first time in their 48-year history, Heritage Auctions’ comics and comic art sales have exceeded $100 million during just the first six months of the year.

According to Heritage, both the comics and comic art categories have seen significant growth in the first half of 2024. They reported that comic sales reached $63.6 million from January to June 2024, besting 2023’s $55 million for the same time period. Similarly, comic art surpassed $36.4 million for that timeframe in 2024, compared to $32.9 million in the first half of 2023.

“Collectors love this material – now seemingly more than ever – and consignors trust us to get it to those who will appreciate it the most,” Heritage Auctions Co-Chairman Jim Halperin said. “And we’ve seen it from key issues to iconic artwork.”

Their cumulative totals aren’t the only headline makers for Heritage’s comics and comic art categories. They sold a copy of Action Comics #1 for $6 million, becoming the most valuable comic in the world. The sale led to Heritage’s first comics and comic art auction that topped $28 million. The year started with The Amazing Spider-Man #1 CGC 9.8 record sale of $1,380,000.

In June, the highest graded unrestored copy of Whiz Comics #2 (#1), featuring Captain Marvel’s debut, sold for the new auction record of $288,000. In that same auction, Lee Elias’ Black Cat Mystery #50 original cover sold for $840,000 to become one of the most valuable comic covers. Frank Miller’s Daredevil #165 cover, his earliest cover offered at auction, reached $324,000, becoming Miller’s most valuable piece from his time on the title.
