Comic book artist Karl Moline, the co-creator of Fray, died on Thursday, September 12, 2024. A cause of death has not been reported; Moline was in his early 50s.

Moline is best known for co-creating Melaka Fray, a vampire slayer in the future, set in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe. He and co-creator Joss Whedon introduced her in the limited series, Fray, and Moline drew her in other Buffy titles like Tales of the Slayers and the Buffy Season Eight series.

Moline spent more than 20 years in comics, providing art for most major publishers. In the ‘90s, he worked on Vampirella Strikes at Harris Publications and issues of 2099: World of Tomorrow at Marvel. He worked with CrossGen, penciling their horror book Route 666, in the early 2000s.

At Marvel, Moline drew Rogue and The Loners, as well as the Daredevil 2099 one-shot and Spider-Man Unlimited. With Dark Horse, he worked on B.P.R.D. War of Frogs and B.P.R.D. The Dead Remembers, and Buffy one-shots, and at DC, his art was in R.E.B.E.L.S. Annual, Supergirl, and Convergence: Superboy.

His work at Marvel continued with Nation X, Avengers Academy, Hulk Smash Avengers, Avengers Arena, and Disney Kingdoms: Seekers of the Weird. He also drew Unity books at Valiant Comics and provided covers for IDW books like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and G.I. Joe.
