The Lanterns TV series has found its John Stewart. Aaron Pierre, who is known for Netflix’s Rebel Ridge, has been cast as the Green Lantern hero.
John Stewart was an architect and US Marine veteran who was introduced in 1971. He was chosen by the Guardians to be Hal Jordan’s backup Green Lantern after Guy Gardner, the previous backup, was seriously injured. Hal was not a fan of the choice, citing that John was belligerent, had a problem with authority, and had a chip on his shoulder. But, during their first mission together John uncovered a political conspiracy and Hal realized that he would make a great Green Lantern.
Pierre’s first foray into a superhero show was playing Dev-Em in Krypton. He was also in Old, Brother, he played Malcolm X in the Genius TV series, and he voices Mufasa in the upcoming film, Mufasa: The Lion King.
The Lanterns TV series will center around John Stewart and Hal Jordan (who will be portrayed by Kyle Chandler). In the show, Hal is considered one of the best members of the Green Lanterns and John is a recent recruit. The two Lanterns will be “drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” per the official synopsis.
Lanterns is part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new connected DCU, and the mystery in Lanterns will continue in the first phase, titled Gods and Monsters. Gunn compared it to True Detective, but with space cops and confirmed that other Lanterns will appear in the show.
Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) is serving as showrunner and executive producer of the eight-episode series. Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comic creator Tom King (Batman) are also executive producing. Mundy, Lindelof, and King are writing the scripts for Lanterns.
