It’s been 30 years since James T. Kirk (William Shatner) died in Star Trek Generations. In honor of that anniversary, the beloved captain of the Enterprise has been brought back for a short film. Titled 765874 Unification the eight-minute short film was created by The Roddenberry Archive and OTOY, in association with Paramount.
Kirk sacrificed himself in Star Trek Generations when he and Captain Jean-Luc Picard teamed up to prevent Dr. Soran from destroying Veridian III. After Leonard Nimoy passed in 2015, Spock’s death became canon in Star Trek Beyond. Now, the pair are reunited in 765874 Unification, the first time they were onscreen together since 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Unification is a peaceful story, setting the scene by following Kirk as he enters an area lush with flowers and foliage. There, he finds a group of people, including Saavik, Sarek, Gary Mitchell, J.M. Colt, and Jorg Hillebrand.
The time soldier Yor then transports him to a place where he meets his younger selves – Captain Kirk and Admiral Kirk. Then he walks into Spock’s chambers on New Vulcan and finds his dear friend. The two share a sweet reunion moment and watch the sunset as the short film ends.
Shatner and Susan Bay Nimoy (actress-director and Nimoy’s widow) were executive producers on the project. Shatner worked with OTOY to ensure that Kirk and other characters would be portrayed accurately in the film. Sam Witwer (Being Human) played Kirk and newcomer Lawrence Selleck played Spock with digital technology used to revive the likenesses of Kirk and Spock.
This is the fourth short film by OTOY and is available through the Roddenberry Archive (Roddenberry.x.io) via the Apple Vision Pro app.
