Clayface, the shapeshifting Batman villain is molding himself into a starring role for his own movie. Mike Flanagan, the horror filmmaker behind Netflix series like The Haunting of Hill House and The Fall of the House of Usher, is penning the script.
The Batman director Matt Reeves will be a producer on the project with his production company business partner Lynn Harris. The movie does not have a lead actor or director yet, but Warner Bros. did confirm that the movie will be released on September 11, 2026.
DC Studios head James Gunn confirmed that the Clayface movie will exist in the same universe as the new connected DCU, which includes the Creature Commandos animated series and the upcoming Superman movie.
Clayface is the moniker used by several villains at DC, starting in 1940 with Basil Karlo, an actor inspired by The Phantom of the Opera. Basil became angry when a horror movie he starred in is being remade without him, so he kills the actors set to star in the new film. He wore the costume of the Clayface killer, one of his previous movie roles, and was stopped by Batman and Robin. Later versions of the character had the monstrous visage of a being made of clay who could shapeshift and absorb matter from others.
A comical version of the character stars in the animated Harley Quinn TV series, voiced by Alan Tudyk. Reeves’ The Penguin series featured a character named Eve Karlo, which was a nod to Basil.
