Captain Planet is ready to “take pollution down to zero” in a new comic book series at Dynamite. Written by David Pepose (Space Ghost) with art by Eman Casallos (Vampirella), this is the first new Captain Planet book in over 30 years. It arrives in April 2025.
The story starts when five teens are chosen to harness the power of Gaia, the High Priestess of Earth, through rings that give them special abilities connected to elemental forces. Kwame from Ghana harnesses the power of earth, Wheeler from the US controls fire, Linka from Russia can maneuver wind, Gi from South Korea has power of water, and Ma-Ti from Brazil uses the power of heart. When the five teens combine their powers, they can summon the superhero, Captain Planet.
“Before these would-be eco-warriors can grasp their own newfound powers in pursuit of environmental justice, they’re first going to have to learn to trust each other. It will be even more of a trial by fire experience when Gaia is kidnapped, forcing the inexperienced Planeteers to learn in action against the well-financed might of Lucian Plunder. Their first test against the ruthless exploiters of Earth won’t be the hardest, but it all starts here,” per Dynamite’s description.
“Every comic creator has their own personal white whale – that singular property they’ve been itching to make their mark on – and for more than a decade Captain Planet has been mine,” writer David Pepose said.
The first issue will be released on April 23, a day after Earth Day, and it is printed on 70% recycled paper. The first issue comes with variants by Mark Spears, Christian Wars, and Ben Oliver, plus connecting covers by Jae Lee and June Chung (on the first six issues).
