Into every generation a Slayer is born, and the one who changed that rule may be returning to fight vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness.
Hulu is developing a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot and original series star Sarah Michelle Gellar is attached for a recurring role. This new chapter in the Buffyverse comes from writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Fringe) and Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) is set to direct the show.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed teenage Buffy (Gellar) who is chosen to protect the world from vampires and other monstrous creatures. In the show’s lore, only one Slayer is chosen at a time – which Buffy and her friends changed during the series finale by using magic to activate all potential Slayers around the world. The new show will focus on a young Slayer with Gellar as a supporting character.
Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, Gellar, and Zhao will be executive producers on the reboot. Original Buffy executive producers Gail Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton are also serving as EPs on the new show. Parton’s Sandollar Television was a producer on the ‘90s show, but she was uncredited at the time.
In the past, Gellar had repeatedly declined interest in returning to the character, given how good the original was when it ended in 2003. But during an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show in December 2024, she called out the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That, and the Dexter prequel (on which she stars) as examples of successful follow-ups to popular series.
There’s currently no word on any other returning cast members.
