ComicConnect President Vincent Zurzolo has reported the sale of the famous Action Comics #1 CGC 6.0 Rocket Copy for $3.55 million. This sale set a new record for the book that introduced Superman and is considered the pinnacle of comic book collecting.

“I love selling Action Comics #1. Every time I do, it is like a childhood dream coming true for me. Maybe beyond a dream. As a kid, I dreamed of just seeing a copy, let alone owning or brokering one,” Zurzolo exclusively told Scoop. “Because of the provenance and the fact we eclipsed the two previous sales in such a short period of time is the icing on the cake for me.”

This copy of the comic is recognizable for having a red rocket ship stamped on the cover, which was put there by its original owner in 1938. This is the third time the Rocket Copy has been sold in the past year, and each time the price keeps climbing. First, Heritage sold it for $3.1 million in their January 2022 auction, then Goldin Auctions and Metropolis Comics brokered a sale of the book for $3.4 million in September 2022.

Adding to the collectability, Zurzolo said, is the actual rubber stamp that produced the original rocket ship imprint was included in the sale. “I love the rocket stamp,” he said. “It fits perfectly with Superman’s origin story when he came to Earth in a rocket ship as a baby.”

The buyer, who works in the tech industry, has chosen to remain anonymous. “As a kid, I’ve always dreamed of getting an Action Comics #1 someday and I’m so excited to get one in a great grade,” he said.

This sale also sets a new auction house record for ComicConnect, besting the CGC 8.5 copy that they sold for $3.25 million in a brokered sale in April 2021. Also in 2021, ComicConnect was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for having achieved eight sales of $1 million or more.

“I believe that comics remain one of the most compelling alternative investment categories, with values that have room for appreciation and growth, especially in comparison to other categories,” Zurzolo said.
