In 1975, horror icon Stephen King delved into the world of vampires for his second novel, Salem’s Lot. The story about writer Ben Mears returning to his childhood hometown to discover that residents are turning into vampires is considered among his greatest novels. The spooky story of sanguinarines was recently adapted as a film, premiering on Max in October 2024. Now, a multitude of Salem’s Lot props from the movie are being sold by Hake’s Auctions.

This section of over 70 pieces makes a big debut with the Marsten House grand fireplace surround, mantle, and family crest screen-used prop. The large 78” x 109” x 12” ornate and intricately detailed fireplace surround features hand-carved noblemen’s faces and flora with the letter “M” displayed above the fireplace as the centerpiece of the Marsten house. It is prominently featured in the scene where Mark Petrie uses his “Houdini” restraint escape skills to overpower Barlow’s loyal servant and henchman, Richard Straker.

The screen-used “Fine Furnishings – Selected Antiques” Barlow & Straker storefront metal entrance sign has gold lettering and trim with a raised gold-winged griffon. The 22” x 38” sign is displayed at the entrance to the antiques store operated by Richard Throckett Straker, the loyal servant and mortal watchdog for the powerful vampire, Kurt Barlow.

Hubie Barclay Marsten’s tombstone production-used prop is another large piece, measuring 41” x 67” x 11”. The tombstone represents the former Marsten House resident who killed his wife and committed suicide. The wood framed tombstone is tailored to look like real stone and is given a weathered, aged appearance and bares the inscription that was taken directly from King’s book.

The E. Miller Furnished Rooms vacancy signed screen-used handmade exterior sign coems from Eva Miller’s Boarding House. A central location in the show, the boarding house is where main character Ben Mears lives while in town. The 18” x 25” tall wooden sign is painted gray and white with a weathered look.

There are many more prop signs in the auction, such as the Barlow & Straker “Select Antiques” storefront entrance sign, “The Cumberland Ledger 36” sign, “The Excellent Café Since 1953” sign, and the “Dr. A. Wilkes D.D.S. – General Dentistry” hanging sign.

Set dressing and props include a Marsten house grand staircase main newel, set dressing pieces from Ben’s room, antique props from Barlow and Straker’s store, Mark Petrie’s bedroom desk, a coffin, mortician’s tools, Danny and Ralphie Glick’s skateboard and Tonka trucks, Holy Trinity Church crucifixes, and much more.

The Salem’s Lot props are part of Hake’s premier Auction #242, which is open for bids until Tuesday and Wednesday, November 19-20, 2024.
