Marvel heroes have long been favorites among comic book readers, and in the late 2000s their stories were brought out of niche comic status and into the larger pop culture consciousness through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From the start, the MCU has gotten award-winning actors and big name stars to play comic book characters with a variety of directors who have used their specific talents to capture the style and tone of comic-based stories. They created highly detailed, rich cinematic experiences with dramatic tales about men and women of honor and lighthearted turns about the misadventures of loveable screwups.
Props from the MCU movies have become highly coveted items in the collecting market, and now fans have the opportunity to purchase some of those treasures in Hake’s Auction #242.
A screen-used Wasp stunt helmet from Ant-Man and the Wasp has flown into the auction. The 9” tall helmet was used to perform stunts in the 2018 movie, which starred Evangeline Lilly as the Wasp. Constructed of high quality plastic with interior padding, the helmet exhibits production wear from use on set during filming, but remains very nice for display purposes. This is the first known example of this highly recognizable prop to ever be offered at auction. It came from someone who worked on the production as well as that of other Marvel films.
The Avengers screen-used Hawkeye stunt arrow quiver with arrow tips is ready to help the hero defeat the Chitauri. The 25-1/2” long stunt-used quiver was featured in the 2012 movie, which was Jeremy Renner’s second appearance as the archer. It is made of resin, plastic, and high density rubber with textured panels of dark purple material. It does not feature arrow shafts, but there are matched racks with notches to hold arrows. The bottom portion of the quiver stores a pair of revolving rubber cylinders that hold 14 different high density foam arrowheads with faux metallic finishes. The back of the quiver has a milled metal bar which would allow for the quiver to be fastened to the back of Hawkeye’s vest.
The auction is ready for mischief with Loki’s screen-used stunt dagger from Thor: The Dark World. The 11-3/4” long dagger was the signature weapon that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) used during the 2013 movie. The dense urethane rubber dagger was painted to give the appearance of a silver blade with Asgardian gold filigree pommel and guard with black handle.
The screen-used Kree stunt pistol from Captain Marvel was used by Starforce, the elite team of warriors, in the 2019 movie. Constructed of dense urethane rubber, the pistol has been painted metallic green with black and silver highlights; the sights are reflective inserts.
The auction also offers Marvel props outside of the MCU, including screen-used Wolverine claw props from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The special effects claws were made for Hugh Jackman’s use in the 2009 film. Each handheld piece is constructed of three cast foam rubber claw bases with bright green taped ends that were used for post-production digital effects. The 2-1/4” wide pieces were designed to be held and hidden between the actor’s fingers and are painted to appear like the fictional Adamantium.
The Thing head and arms costume props were worn by Michael Chiklis in Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). The painted foam latex appliances feature a detailed orange color scheme with wash applied to dark recesses of The Thing’s rocky exterior. The costume appliances consist of the cowl with a neck piece, brow piece, and lower face as well as a separate piece for the back of head. The pair of 21-1/2” long arms are foam latex with fabric lining from the shoulders to wrists.
Additional MCU props include a Hulk screen-used gamma cylinder prop that was part of the gammasphere device, Iron Man and Ant-Man business cards, screen-used Pepper Potts Stark Industries book prop from Iron Man 2, and a screen-used Asgardian Dragon head set piece from Thor among others.
These MCU items are part of a large offering of film and TV-used props in Hake’s Auction #242. The premier event is open for bids now through Tuesday and Wednesday, November 19-20, 2024.
