Hake’s current Auction #242 is packed with something for every collector. There are campaign pins, comic books, baseball cards, music memorabilia, and plenty more in the 2,067-lot auction. One of the auction’s many notable categories is the action figure section, which is packed with rarities and desirable pieces.
The Adventures of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark Belloq Series 2 9-back AFA 50 was initially offered as a boxed mail-order premium. The figure of Belloq in the ceremonial robe did not see traditional distribution to the public for purchase as it is believed that only a handful of figures were packaged on cards. It is presumed that they were produced before the toy line was cancelled and was likely intended for usage as Toy Fair displays or salesman samples. This is the first time that Hake’s has offered this piece, which is one of only four graded by AFA.
The Masters of the Universe Eternia Series 5 playset AFA 70 was marketed as “The Biggest Masters of the Universe Set Ever.” It has three themed towers with three battery-operated vehicles that run around the entire playset on a monorail system, and Grayskull Tower has an elevator that reaches various levels. The playset comes with a multitude of accessories and weapons, including a weapons rack, ladder, grappling hooks, laser guns, and ramps.
Mego World’s Greatest Superheroes Aquaman figure AFA 75 is still on its original card. The 8” tall poseable figure has the sewn-on belt and the leggings remain green with no yellowing that is frequently seen with this figure’s outfit. The scarce carded figure is one of just four examples graded by AFA with only one higher.
Transformers Series 1 Optimus Prime AFA 85 is the version of the Autobot Commander that was released in Mexico by Plásticos IGA. The main difference in packaging is the Spanish text and the absence of the tech spec chart on the back of the box, which has been replaced w/Spanish language character biography and Plásticos IGA logo. Among the most desirable Series 1 Transformers toys, this Mexican version is much scarcer than Hasbro’s American release.
Hake’s is selling G.I. Joe protypes, including the bomb disposal vehicle and transport vehicle. Both circa 1985 Hasbro prototypes are hand-constructed of long styrene and resin plastic. The bomb disposal comes with a bomb and landmine and the transport vehicle has a trailer and bomb.
More highly sought figures include a G.I. Joe Destro Series 2 32-back AFA 85 (peach file card), Action Boy Robin boxed uniform and equipment set AFA 80+ (Canadian issue), M.A.S.K. Rhino Series 1 AFA 85 and Thunder Hawk Series 1 AFA 85 (both second release, long mask), and the Real Ghostbusters Fire Station Headquarters Series 1 playset UKG 75%Q.
Highlights also include a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Undercover Michaelangelo Series 7 97-card back AFA 80+ and Turtle Blimp Series 1 vehicle AFA 85 (video game notice), Voltron Defender of the Universe Panosh Place gift set AFA 75 (window box version).
