The galaxy far, far away was a big hit in Hake’s premier Auction #242. Star Wars action figures and related material accounted for many of the auction’s top sellers, helping propel it to a $2.5 million total.
The Boba Fett rocket-firing prototype (L-slot) AFA 85 soared to $114,224. The figure was originally made for the 1979 Kenner toy line, however the rocket-firing capability was deemed a choking hazard and the figure was dropped. The only examples available are in prototype form, and that number is further limited because many were damaged while Kenner ran safety tests on them. With several of the already finite number in rough condition due to those tests, higher graded examples like this one have become among the most sought after Star Wars figures.
Star Wars accounted for two of the auction’s top three sellers. The Glasslite Star Wars: Droids Vlix AFA 80, which is the single highest graded example, hammered for $44,261. The figure was only released in Brazil because the animated series was cancelled, making this the rarest of all Star Wars figures that were commercially released. This is one of just 12 graded by AFA.
The Empire Strikes Back Walrus Man card with Bib Fortuna (white cape) figure AFA 70 salesman’s sample sold well beyond the $20,000 estimate, reaching $28,556. The 47-back card was created for salesman to promote the upcoming Return of the Jedi toy line. This is one of only three examples graded by AFA.
Multiple Star Wars figures sold for more than their preauction estimates. The Empire Strikes Back Yoda 32-back-B AFA 90 (orange snake variety) realized $18,568, more than triple the $5,000 estimate. The Luke Skywalker 12-back-A AFA 85 (blonde hair) cruised by the $10,000 estimate to sell for $16,226. A Return of the Jedi Squid Head card with Wicket W. Warrick figure 65-back-A AFA 80 salesman’s sample cleared $13,421, over the $10,000 estimate. The Empire Strikes Back Boba Fett 47-back AFA 85 (highest in AFA’s population report) more than doubled the $5,000 estimate when it brought $12,379.
Star Wars highlights also included the Jawa 12-back-A AFA 85 (vinyl cape variety) for $15,576, The Empire Strikes Back Han Solo (Hoth outfit) 12” Series box flat AFA 80 for $12,302, The Power of the Force Yak Face 92-back AFA 80 (Kenner Canada) for $10,708 and Anakin Skywalker 92-back AFA 70 for $10,384, and The Empire Strikes Back six-pack AFA 75 (yellow background) for $9,086.
