ComicLink has added an example of 1939’s historic Superman #1 with visual appeal that they described as “far exceeding the assigned condition” to its Winter Featured Auction that starts on February 14, 2025.

“This example of one of the most important comic books ever published has been certified by CGC as 3.5 but has the visual appeal of a comic book with a much higher grade. Simply put, we cannot imagine a better looking 3.5 for this issue. Fresh and bold cover colors dominate the impression both on-screen and in hand,” ComicLink founder and Managing Director Josh Nathanson said. “The focal point of Superman is virtually free of blemishes with barely a hint of handling wear, as is the logo area. Instead, the wear on the book is relegated primarily to the spine, out of the visible area of the front cover. The inside is as fresh as the outside with Off-White to White page quality, a level of preservation that is extremely uncommon for this 1939 issue.”

Superman #1 is the first comic book ever devoted to a single character. It went on sale a year after Action Comics #1 introduced the character. Importantly, it included the first expanded origin of Superman, which was two pages versus the very brief one page origin in Action Comics #1. That first story in Action Comics #1 didn’t name the exploding planet that birthed Superman and it mentioned only that he was found by a passing motorist after his rocket landed on Earth before being handed over to an orphanage.

In Superman #1’s expanded origin we learn that the planet of his birth was called Krypton. We also meet the Kents for the first time, the kindly old couple that found the alien baby. They do drop him off at an orphanage, but soon return to adopt him. They name him Clark and raise him to use his abilities to assist humanity. The couple passes away when Clark Kent is a young adult, an event which gives him the determination to become the champion of the oppressed, Superman. In two brief pages, this story in Superman #1 establishes the tone of the character that has fueled the heart and soul of over 85 years of stories told in virtually every type of media.
