The Golden Age Daredevil Bart Hill initially appeared in Lev Gleason Publications in the 1940s. He fought battles against the Claw, Nazis, mad scientists, Wolf Carson, the Ghoul, the Deadly Dozen and other nefarious types.

Daredevil was created by Jack Binder for a back-up feature in Silver Streak #6 (September 1940). Bart Hill became mute after being branded by a hot iron and seeing his father murdered. The orphaned boy became a boomerang marksman and as an adult took the mantle of a vigilante. After his first issue, the character was tweaked, giving him back his voice and changing the design of his costume from yellow and dark blue to dark red and blue.

Daredevil was given his own book in July 1941, starting with Daredevil Battles Hitler #1 where he and other Silver Streak heroes fought the German dictator. That issue was written by Charles Biro who would regularly work on the title when it was renamed Daredevil Comics. He had a 16-year run with the character and reworked his origin in Daredevil Comics #18 having Bart raised by aborigines in Australia.

The Little Wise Guys, a kid gang, were introduced in issue 13 and would eventually become the central focus of the book by issue 70. Since then, the Daredevil has been revived by multiple publishers, starting with AC Comics in the 1980s. He appeared in Alter Ego at First Publications, showed up in Image Comics’ Next Issue Project, and he was featured in Project Superpowers and in a solo miniseries at Dynamite Entertainment.
